Toyota Motor Corporation is a
Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in Toyota, Aichi,
Japan. In March 2014, Toyota's corporate structure consisted of 338,875
employees worldwide and, as of October 2016, was the ninth-largest company in
the world by revenue. As of 2016, Toyota is the world's second-largest
automotive manufacturer behind German Volkswagen Group. The company was founded
by Kiichiro Toyoda in 1937.
Toyota is the world's market
leader in sales of hybrid electric vehicles, and one of the largest companies
to encourage the mass-market adoption of hybrid vehicles across the globe. Its
Prius family is the world's top selling hybrid nameplate with over 6 million
units sold worldwide as of January 2017.
Toyota Motor Corporation produces
vehicles under five brands, including the Toyota brand, Hino, Lexus, Ranz, and
Daihatsu. It also holds a 16.66% stake in Subaru Corporation, a 5.9% stake in
Isuzu, as well as joint-ventures with two in China (GAC Toyota and Sichuan FAW
Toyota Motor), one in India (Toyota Kirloskar), one in the Czech Republic
(TPCA).
Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (German
for Bavarian Motor Works), usually known under its abbreviation BMW, is a
German luxury vehicle, motorcycle, and engine manufacturing company founded in
1916. It is one of the best-selling luxury automakers in the world.
Headquartered in Munich, Bavaria,
BMW is the parent company of Mini and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. The company
produces motorcars under the BMW Motorsport division and motorcycles under BMW
Motorrad, and plug-in electric cars under the BMW i sub-brand and the "I Performance"
model designation within the regular BMW line up.
BMW was established as a business
entity following a restructuring of the Rapp Motorenwerke aircraft
manufacturing firm in 1912 named Aerowerke Gustav Otto. After the end of World
War I in 1918, BMW was forced to cease aircraft-engine production by the terms
of the Versailles Armistice Treaty. The company consequently shifted to
motorcycle production as the restrictions of the treaty started to be lifted in
1923, followed by automobiles in 1928–29.
Tata Motors Limited (formerly
TELCO, short for Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company) is an Indian
multinational automotive manufacturing company headquartered in Mumbai, India,
and a member of the Tata Group. Its products include passenger cars, trucks,
vans, coaches, buses, sports cars, construction equipment and military
vehicles.
Tata Motors' principal
subsidiaries purchased the English premium car maker Jaguar Land Rover (the
maker of Jaguar and Land Rover cars) and the South Korean commercial vehicle
manufacturer Tata Daewoo. Tata Motors has a bus-manufacturing joint venture
with Marcopolo S.A. (Tata Marcopolo), a construction-equipment manufacturing
joint venture with Hitachi (Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery), and a joint
venture with Fiat Chrysler which manufactures automotive components and Fiat
Chrysler and Tata branded vehicles.
Founded in 1945 as a manufacturer
of locomotives, the company manufactured its first commercial vehicle in 1954
in collaboration with Daimler-Benz AG, which ended in 1969. Tata Motors entered
the passenger vehicle market in 1991 with the launch of the Tata Sierra,
becoming the first Indian manufacturer to achieve the capability of developing
a competitive indigenous automobile. In 1998, Tata launched the first fully
indigenous Indian passenger car, the Indica, and in 2008 launched the Tata
Nano, the world's cheapest car. Tata Motors acquired the South Korean truck
manufacturer Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company in 2004 and purchased Jaguar
Land Rover from Ford in 2008.
Geely (officially Zhejiang Geely
Holding Group Co., Ltd) is a Chinese multinational automotive manufacturing
company founded by Li Shufu in 1986 and headquartered in Hangzhou, Zhejiang.
Its principal products are automobiles, taxis, motorcycles, delivery vans,
engines, and transmissions. It sells passenger cars under the Geely and Volvo
brands since 2010 and taxis under the London Taxi brand since 2012. Delivery
vans are sold under the brand Emerald.
Mahindra and Mahindra Limited
(M&M) is an Indian multinational automobile manufacturing corporation
headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is one of the largest vehicle
manufacturers by production in India and the largest manufacturer of tractors
in the world. It is a part of Mahindra Group, an Indian conglomerate.
Mahindra & Mahindra was
set up as a steel trading company in 1945 in Ludhiana as Mahindra & Mohammed by brothers K.C. Mahindra and J.C. Mahindra and Malik Ghulam Mohammed.
Mohammed emigrated to Pakistan after independence. The company changed its name
to Mahindra & Mahindra in 1948.
Eventually it started selling
larger MUVs, starting with the assembly under licence of the Willys Jeep in
India. Soon established as the Jeep manufacturers of India, the company later
commenced manufacturing light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and agricultural
tractors.
Over the past few years, the
company has taken interest in new industries and in foreign markets. They
entered the two-wheeler industry by taking over Kinetic Motors in India. M&M
also has a controlling stake in the REVA Electric Car Company and acquired
South Korea's SsangYong Motor Company in 2011.
