Chery International is studying the possibility of entering
India, becoming the latest among Chinese automakers to show interest in this
fast-growing automobile market.
China's top car exporter, which has a joint venture with
Tata Motors' Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) unit in its home country, may leverage
that partners hip to drive into this market or look at other options, its
chairman said.
“India is a great country with a good heritage. We have a
partnership with Tata Group. We may explore a tie-up to enter India,“ Yin
Tongyao told ET on the sidelines of the Frankfurt Motor Show last week. “It may
be with Tata Motors or without them, nothing is decided.“
Chinese automakers have long been talking about entering
India, but have yet to launch their products here. But some of them have taken
more definite steps in recent times, as they look for new markets to offset a
slowdown in sales growth at home.
While Shanghai Automotive and Beiqi Foton have firmed up
their India plans, Changan and Great Wall have had several rounds of
discussions with authorities here. Chery, a state owned company, has sold more
than six million vehicles since its inception two decades ago.
